The Search for a Uniting Force
An immigrant bred amidst the vibrant cultural tapestry of Southern California, SRCFLP (ソースフリップ) began his musical journey in the heart of South Central Los Angeles. It was within this dynamic community that the open mics of Project Blowed played a crucial role, initiating him into the Hip Hop culture and catalyzing his dedicated exploration of the craft of MC'ing. Here, he meticulously honed his skills and refined his musical vision, immersing himself deeply in the local music and rave scene.
Channeling The Alien Experience
An unexpected turning point emerged during his homage to New York when his passion for crafting beats began to eclipse his dedication to perfecting verses. He starts exploring his distinctive sound in beat making, drawing from his experiences as an Alien (legally termed immigrant). Progressing from the streets to the studio, he began honing skills of beat making with the SP404, MPC, Octatrack, and Ableton. In 2016, a significant chapter unfolded when he rocked the pinnacle of the beat scene, the renowned Low End Theory.
Several years after releasing the album 'Hours,' he found himself immersed in the bass music scene of the Bay Area and collaborating with visual artists and beat makers of Boston. And as the effects of the 2021 pandemic started to diminish, SRCFLP released his album 'EKG'.
Breaking through genre barriers, EKG was praised for its sound texture reminiscent of JDilla's "Donuts", and critically acclaimed for evoking boundless sonic explorations of luminaries such as Madlib and Four Tet.
Sonic Exploration: The Intersection of Art and Technology
SRCFLP's steadfast commitment to merging avant-garde technology with artistic expression distinguishes him as a beat visionary.
Notably, the album 'EKG' caught the attention of Ian Condry, director of the Spatial Sound Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, leading to discussions and sessions, and eventually, an official invitation to join the laboratory as a researcher. This opportunity marked a new phase for SRCFLP. Through this collaboration, quadraphonic techniques and video synthesis were incorporated into the live performances, ushering into a new realm of "audiovisual art".
